Bruno Fernandes is on fire for Manchester United – but can he break the assist record?

Bruno Fernandes has somehow become even more influential in an unstable Manchester United side.

The Portuguese playmaker is the heart of the team. Even when United have been inconsistent, he has stayed at the top of his game.

When former manager Ruben Amorim first pushed Fernandes into a deeper holding midfield role, it surprised many. This is a player known for arriving in the box and taking risks in the final third. However, the change made him a better player this season.

Even a rare injury absence late in 2025 did little to affect his form. It was his first real fitness setback in years, but when he returned, he looked sharper.

In the Premier League, Fernandes leads the Premier League with 12 assists in 21 appearances. These numbers have come while adjusting roles and playing deeper than usual for long stretches.

The reliable engine behind United’s creative resurgence

Since arriving at Manchester United in January 2020, Fernandes has been consistent. Whenever he completes a full season, he is guaranteed to hit at least ten goals and assists apiece.

Fitness issues were almost unheard of until his recent hamstring problem. His long-term reliability is just as impressive as his creativity.

Under Michael Carrick, Bruno has been allowed to play higher up the pitch again, closer to the forwards. The effect has been immediate. He has had six assists in his last five games across all competitions.

Bruno has options everywhere, with runners like Benjamin Sesko stretching defenses and Amad offering movement between the lines. His expected assists have increased, and so has the speed of United’s attacking play.

The Premier League single-season assists record stands at 20, shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Fernandes needs eight more to match it and nine to claim it outright.

Recent results have improved as the chances are flowing, and Fernandes is at the center of almost everything creative. If his teammates finish at a reasonable rate, there is a chance he could beat the record.

Striver football verdict

This feels like the most complete version of Fernandes we have seen. Apart from being a prolific creator of big chances, he controls the tempo and dictates space. Furthermore, he delivers decisive actions in the final third.

Will he break the assists record? If his fitness holds, it is hard to bet against him. Eight assists in the remainder of the season is demanding, but realistic for a player in this kind of form.

Whether he equals the record or surpasses it, this season already feels like a defining chapter in Fernandes’ career. If the finishing around him sharpens even slightly, history may be rewritten.
