Premier League leaders Arsenal pulled off a fascinating piece of late-window business when they secured the signature of 18-year-old defender Jaden Dixon from Stoke City.

Dixon is regarded as one of the best centre-backs in his youth group in England, and Arsenal fans are beginning to realise they may have struck gold with the defender.

But who exactly is Dixon, and what do Arsenal fans need to know about him? Striver.football brings you up to date.

5. Dixon is a former Tottenham academy product

Yes, you heard that right. Dixon was part of Tottenham Hotspur’s youth setup at some point. The defender actually began his journey on the other side of the Seven Sisters Road. However, he got released in 2023, before Stoke opted to hand him an opportunity to revive his career.

Former Stoke academy director Gareth Owen noted the irony of the move to Radio Stoke, stating, “It’ll be interesting how he handles being an ex-Tottenham player at Arsenal.”

However, his talent far outweighs any local rivalry. Dixon is widely considered one of the best center-halves in his age group nationwide.

4. Dixon mentored by one of the game’s notable hardmen

During his Stoke City days, Dixon was being fast-tracked by a Premier League veteran. Former Potters captain Ryan Shawcross reportedly took the youngster under his wing after he signed his professional contract in May 2024.

Shawcross, who himself is a controversial figure in the eyes of Arsenal fans due to his infamous challenge on Aaron Ramsey in 2010 – which left the Welshman suffering a broken tibia and fibula – has refined Dixon’s ability as a defender,

He has shown great positional awareness in high-pressure zones. His one-on-one defending has also moved a notch higher, and his reading of the game has improved. Shawcross has been at the heart of the refinement.

3. Dixon can play across the back four

Since taking charge at Arsenal, Mikel Arteta has valued versatility in his players, particularly at the back. Players like Takehiro Tomiyasu, Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White and Jurrien Timber have shown their capability playing across the backline.

Dixon fits that mold perfectly. Despite being naturally right-footed, he has shown a remarkable ability to play across the entire backline.

2. Dixon is an England youth international

Dixon’s rise on the international stage has been meteoric. In less than two years, he has climbed from the England U17s to the Under-19 squad.

He debuted for the U17s in a dominant 5-1 win over Northern Ireland. The London-born defender also featured in the 2024 European Under-17 Championships.

Cumulatively, he has already racked up 11 appearances for the U18s and five for the U19s.

1. How much has he been signed for?

Some reports have suggested Arsenal paid a modest upfront fee of £500,000, while others indicate the total package could rise as high as £3.2m based on various benchmarks.

Regardless of the price, Arsenal view Dixon as a player who will immediately bolster the Development Squad with the potential for his market value to skyrocket as he nears the first team.

Arsenal fans will be keen to monitor his progress. In the summer of 2019, they signed a certain exciting defensive prospect by the name of William Saliba.

Saliba has gone on to establish himself as one of the world’s best defenders seven years down the line. Can Dixon follow suit? Only time will tell.
