The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon opened their account at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Gabon in a high-tempo, no-nonsense encounter. David Pagou made a significant impact on the game.

It was the kind of game AFCON thrives on intense duels, crunching tackles, flashes of quality from both sides and Cameroon did just enough to get the job done.

But while the football delivered, it was what happened after the final whistle that truly set tongues wagging.

The post-match press conference, led by Cameroon head coach David Pagou, quickly shifted attention away from the pitch and straight into the heart of Cameroon’s ongoing football power struggle one that centres around Samuel Eto’o.

At the centre of the storm is Samuel Eto’o, president of FECAFOOT, Cameroon’s football federation, and Marc Brys, the Belgian coach appointed by the Ministry of Sports.

Despite Eto’o publicly announcing Brys’ dismissal, the Belgian continued to insist that his contract remains valid and that he is still the legitimate head coach of the national team.

Eto’o responded by appointing David Pagou as head coach and unveiling a completely different 28-man squad for AFCON. That move poured petrol on an already raging fire.

The situation escalated further when Brys launched a scathing public attack on Eto’o, describing him as “narcissistic” and accusing him of putting personal interests above the good of the nation.

According to Brys, their relationship had been fractured from their very first meeting, and he believes Eto’o had been looking for an excuse to remove him from the job all along.

Eto’o’s AFCON squad selection only added to the controversy, with major names like André Onana, Eric Choupo-Moting and Vincent Aboubakar left out—fueling suspicions of internal politics and power games within Cameroonian football.

Refusing to accept his removal, Brys went as far as releasing his own squad list and declaring himself the rightful head coach unless an official presidential decree says otherwise.

The unprecedented standoff left players, staff and fans confused over who would actually lead the Indomitable Lions into AFCON and which squad would even take the field.

When the tournament finally kicked off, it was David Pagou’s team that represented Cameroon.

After the win against Gabon, Pagou did little to cool the tension. Instead, he leaned straight into it.

“I dedicate this win against Gabon to Samuel Eto’o and to my family,” Pagou said.

Then came the warning shots.

“We haven’t really started yet. What people saw on the pitch was just training, not real football.

The real football will begin when I reveal the key players I’ve been keeping secret. That’s when our opponents in this AFCON will start panicking.”

With Cameroon opening their AFCON campaign in this fashion, both David Pagou and Samuel Eto’o now have plenty to prove.

The early result has bought them some breathing space, but as the tournament progresses, all eyes will remain on the Indomitable Lions not just for what they do on the pitch, but for how this power struggle continues to shape their AFCON journey.
