Mo Salah’s national team team-mates have rallied around him as they prepare for their AFCON campaign.
The Liverpool player, who is currently in the headlines for the wrong reasons after a post-match attack on the club’s management. He will join up with the squad after Saturday’s game against Brighton. A game that could be his last in Liverpool red.
With the spotlight on the ‘Egyptian King’ brighter than usual following a poor start to the season. His fellow country-men have rallied around to support him.
Hossam Hassan, Egypt’s head coach, has come out in support of his talisman who will be integral to any success the squad have in the upcoming AFCON. He posted a photograph of himself and Salah with a message that read: “Always a symbol of perseverance and strength.”
Winger Ahmed “Zico” El Sayed, who plays for Al Ahly labelled Salah “the greatest Liverpool legend of all time” while Goalkeeper Mohammed Sobhy said his international team-mate was ”always the best”.
The most poignant message came from Hassa Kouka who posted a lengthy instagram caption praising his international captain. He stated that “Mo Salah isn’t one of us. Mo is in a different category like Cristiano and Messi.
“Players like that don’t get benched and if, for any reason, they start on the bench. You must make sure they’re the first to come on.
“60 minutes, 65 minutes maximum… not “not even coming in”. That’s just dsrespectful he’s done for the club.”
If this Egypt squad are to win their first AFCON title since 2010 then they will need Salah firing and not dwelling on his torrid season so far.
‘The Pharoahs’ are historically the most successful team in the tournament having won it on seven occasions.
However, they face a tough group with it containing two nations that will be heading to the World Cup this summer. South Africa will travel to North America, aswell as Egypt.
They will also face Zimbabwe and Angola in the group stage.
