Egypt winger Trezeguet has signalled that his team is fully focused on their crucial AFCON 2025 Group B clash against South Africa.
With both Egypt and South Africa locked on three points at the top of Group B, the upcoming match promises to be a pivotal contest.
Egypt aim to consolidate their lead while South Africa will look to make an early statement.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Egypt’s second Group B fixture in AFCON 2025, Trézéguet emphasized that this match represents a key moment not only for the team. It is also crucial for his own journey in Egypt’s AFCON history.
Moreover, he highlighted that the encounter offers an important opportunity to build momentum in the group stage. Simultaneously, it helps in reinforcing the squad’s confidence and unity. Consequently, both he and his teammates are approaching the game with full focus and determination. They are aiming to leave a mark on the tournament.
“The match against South Africa is important for the group order. We are playing to win,” he said
adding that the squad had thoroughly analysed their opponents and were ready “to make the fans happy.”
He highlighted that preparation for this match has been meticulous. The team reviewed strategies for Trezeguet and Egypt to discuss tactics to exploit South Africa’s weaknesses. Meanwhile, they focused on reinforcing their own strengths in the AFCON.
Group Standings Heighten Stakes
Egypt currently top Group B with three points. They are level with South Africa in second place, while Zimbabwe and Angola remain without points.
Consequently, the outcome of this fixture could significantly influence the group standings. It will determine the route for both teams to the knockout stages.
The 31-year-old winger also explained that continuous dialogue between players and the technical staff had helped the squad identify both strengths and weaknesses ahead of the encounter. This dialogue is a crucial aspect of Trezeguet Egypt's AFCON strategy.
Reflecting on Opening Victory
Trézéguet spoke positively about Egypt’s opening match against Zimbabwe. He insisted that the narrow margin did not reflect the team’s dominance on the pitch.
“We were the better side against Zimbabwe and managed to win at the end,” he said, revealing that Egypt registered more than 33 attempts on goal in that match.
He explained that recent training sessions had concentrated on improving efficiency in front of goal. The team has worked hard to convert chances into scores.
Looking to the South Africa clash, Trezeguet and Egypt will approach the AFCON game with maximum intensity. They are likening it to a cup final.
“We are approaching this match like a final. It is very important for us,” he said.
He acknowledged that the round-of-16 exit to South Africa at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations remains a painful memory. However, he insisted that the current squad is fully prepared and determined to avoid a repeat of that disappointment.
“We have learned from the past, and we are ready for Friday’s challenge,” Trézéguet added.
Trézéguet’s comments underline the team’s determination, tactical awareness, and ambition. They aim to maintain dominance in the group stage and make their fans proud.
