Manchester United fans are buzzing after 15-year-old sensation JJ Gabriel was spotted training with the first team for a second consecutive day.
Despite rubbing shoulders with senior stars ahead of the clash against Tottenham, Gabriel remains ineligible for his Premier League debut.
The Premier League rule holding him back
While supporters are eager to see the wonderkid break records, a strict Premier League eligibility rule stands in the way.
To feature in a Premier League match, a player must be at least 15 years old at the start of the season.
Gabriel started the 2025/26 campaign at age 14. Even though he celebrated his 15th birthday in October, the league’s “start-of-season” cut-off means he cannot legally take the pitch in a senior league game until next year.
This mirrors the situation with Arsenal’s Max Dowman, where registration rules dictate the timeline regardless of a player’s physical or technical readiness.
Interim boss Michael Carrick included Gabriel in Tuesday’s recovery session after the win over Fulham.
It was his inclusion on Wednesday, however —alongside a full-strength squad—that caught the eye.
Gabriel wasn’t the only youngster involved; Carrick also promoted Jack and Tyler Fletcher and Jack Moorhouse to the senior fold. However, it is Gabriel’s “Neymar-esque” flair that has sparked the most conversation among the coaching staff.
JJ Gabriel’s 2025/26 season
Gabriel’s rise isn’t just hype; the numbers coming out of the U18 squad are staggering. He has already scored 11 goals in 16 games at academy level.
Gabriel has played an integral part in the two wins they have recorded, all as a key starter. He is also two-footed, with explosive dribbling and agility.
United’s Under-18s manager, Darren Fletcher, has urged patience despite admitting the hype is “deserved.”
“JJ is a fantastic talent. He’s a young lad with a massive sort of hype, and deservedly so because he’s a real talented kid. But for just now, it’s a little bit early. His time will come in due course.”
The club is taking a protective approach, especially after Jason Wilcox worked hard to keep the teenager at Old Trafford last summer amid heavy interest from Barcelona and other European giants.
What’s next for JJ Gabriel?
While he won’t be in the squad to face Spurs this weekend, his regular presence in first-team training suggests United are preparing him for a massive breakout in the 2026/27 season.
For now, Gabriel will continue to lead the line for the U18s, where he recently became the youngest scorer in FA Youth Cup history.
