The Emirates Stadium was meant to be a place of comfort for Arsenal, a team sitting at the top of the Premier League table.

Instead, the atmosphere turned tense as the Gunners suffered a 3-2 defeat to Michael Carrick's Manchester United. The result left both players and fans stunned as they suffered their first home loss of the season.

Mikel Merino’s late equalizer in the 84th minute felt like a massive relief. At that moment, Arsenal believed they had secured a point.

However, that hope lasted just three minutes before substitute Matheus Cunha fired a brilliant long-range shot past David Raya, sealing a victory that silenced the stadium.

Patrick Vieira did not hide his disappointment following the final whistle.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the legendary former captain highlighted exactly what he felt was missing from the current Arsenal side.

"There are still some questions about the mental strength of the team," Vieira remarked. "It’s not just that they lost the game. It’s the way they lost the game."

Observing that the players looked tense and restricted, he added: "Arsenal need to go back to the basics.

"They need to play with freedom and express themselves going forward."

Vieira warned that unless the mentality shifts, performances like this could easily repeat themselves during the title run-in.

Several key individuals were called out by the former captain. Bukayo Saka, often Arsenal’s most dangerous attacking threat, was quiet throughout the match. Vieira made it clear that during tough moments, the best players must take the lead.

He stated, "Some of the players need to perform at their best because some of them didn’t perform today. I think Saka was too quiet. In big games like this, you expect him to lead the team and perform, but he didn’t."

Leandro Trossard also struggled to make a significant impact. Vieira admitted the Belgian was ineffective, noting a distinct lack of threat from the left wing.

Furthermore, Gabriel Jesus clearly put in the effort, but Vieira pointed out that energy alone is not enough. He criticized the Brazilian for lacking a clinical presence inside the box when the team needed it most.

Leadership was also a key talking point for the Arsenal legend. Vieira noted that Declan Rice was the only midfielder who performed at the required level, whereas Martin Odegaard was criticized for playing it too safe.

He remarked, "Odegaard is one of the technical leaders of the team because of his vision and his passing, but I would like to see him play higher between the lines.

"I think at times he plays it too safe and comes too close to the back four.

"They need a leader to lift the spirit of the team; they need someone to make them understand that when they are on the field, they must play with more energy and take more risks, because they certainly have the quality."

After highlighting Arsenal’s flaws, Vieira also gave credit to the opposition. Manchester United took advantage of Arsenal’s hesitation and punished them when it mattered most.

Cunha’s stunning winner was a just reward for United’s persistence, as they managed to defeat the Gunners at the Emirates for the first time this season.

The loss to United carries consequences in the title race. Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table has narrowed from seven points to just four, with both Manchester City and Aston Villa closing the gap.

Vieira’s message was clear. If the Gunners want to stay ahead, they must improve their mental strength and demonstrate far more leadership when the pressure hits.
