Fabregas record shattered, Messi comparison and more: Why Max Dowman has the world at his feet at Arsenal

While most 15-year-olds are worrying about GCSE mocks, Max Dowman is busy rewriting history at Arsenal.

On Friday, Arsenal officially announced a pre-contract agreement with Dowman that will see him sign professional terms when he turns 17 in December.

It is a calculated move to prevent other suitors from taking such a prized asset away. He is a prospect so special that he already had three senior competitive appearances for a title-challenging Arsenal before he turned 16.

The Fabregas comparison

Born in December 2010, Dowman has already shattered records set by quite some big names, beginning with Arsenal.

He had made his under-18 debut at 13. By the time he was 14, he was already scoring in the U19 UEFA Youth League.

Arsenal’s current youngest ever Premier League scorer is Cesc Fabregas at 17 years, 3 months and 21 days.

At 15 years and 302 days, Dowman became the youngest starter in Arsenal’s history. It was during a Carabao Cup win over Brighton. It was a record previously set by Cesc Fabregas in 2003.

He also became the youngest Premier League player in history during their 5-0 win over Leeds United at 15 Years, 235 Days in August. He effectively shattered a record set by Ethan Nwaneri, who himself set it in 2022.

Then, in November 2025, Dowman became the youngest player to ever feature in the UEFA Champions League (15 years, 308 days) against Slavia Prague, surpassing Youssoufa Moukoko’s long-standing record.

Not even Lamine Yamal, who has become a global superstar two-and-a-half years after his Champions League bow in September 2023, matches that.

Mikel Arteta did not hold back when asked about the teenager’s ceiling. Arteta came through the ranks at Barcelona, and seemingly compared Dowman’s potential to Lionel Messi.

“What he’s done with us at the age of 15, me personally, I haven’t seen it before,” Arteta admitted. “Only with a guy that used to play in Barcelona [Messi], but maybe not even that. He has a certain charisma and personality—he doesn’t get overwhelmed.”

Can Dowman, Saka & Nwaneri co-exist?

Dowman may have signed his first professional terms, but he may have some way to go before he can firmly cement himself in the first team.

So far, Dowman has featured as a right inverted winger. Sensible considering he uses his fearless ball-carrying and willingness to take on his opposition at pace. He has earned comparisons to former Brazilian great Kaka due to these traits.

However, he has often been used as a right central midfielder at academy level. At the moment,  Bukayo Saka (24) is established as one of the world’s best right-wingers.

Nwaneri (18), who was sent out on loan to Marseille for more first-team minutes, is blossoming into the heir-apparent to Martin Odegaard.

As a result, fans are asking if there is enough grass on the pitch for Dowman, who also thrives as an inverted winger or a number 10. Perhaps his versatility could allow him to be on the same team as his fellow Hale End seniors.

With Arsenal expected to challenge for all four trophies nowadays, there is the burden of fixture congestion. Rotation will be key.

Under the new Champions League format and expanded domestic schedules, having three world-class left-footed creators will be a luxury.

Dowman’s unique pathway

In October, The Athletic highlighted the “symbolic corridor” at Arsenal’s training center, London Colney, that youth players walk down while graduating to the first team.

Dowman was so mature for his age that it was basically an irrelevant right of passage for him. He was so physically and technically ready and was fast-tracked to the senior team before he was legally allowed to change there without safeguarding supervision.

He suffered a ligament injury in December. It is an injury that has briefly halted his momentum, but the sky is the limit for the young star.

Dowman’s record-breaking trajectory

“This means everything to me,” Dowman said on Arsenal.com after signing his new deal. “There’s such a clear pathway here… Bukayo, Myles, and Ethan all really inspire me.”

“It’s amazing to have role models so close who have experienced the same thing that I have. I’m now so excited to continue to work hard with my development.”

Everything is now set in place for Dowman to continue chasing records and actually live up to the immense potential he has already shown.
