Tottenham Hotspur defender Luka Vuskovic has impressed tremendously in his loan spell with Bundesliga side Hamburg.
The 18-year-old is one of the most exciting talents in European football, with Bayern Munich intensifying their pursuit, according to German outlet TZ.
Despite a flurry of interest, the North London club is adamant that it can withstand any interest from Europe’s most elite teams.
His incredible performances have earned praise from some of the best footballers in the last 40 years.
With speculation brewing around one Spurs defender, could he be thrust into the line-up as early as next season?
Where was he before Tottenham?
Vuskovic came through the Hajduk Split academy, making his debut two days after his 16th birthday against Dinamo Zagreb.
Consequently, he became the youngest player in the Croatian top-flight, joining Marko Dabro.
In March 2023, he scored the opening goal in Hajduk Split’s 2-1 win against Osijek in the Croatian Cup quarterfinals.
Scoring at 16 years and five days, he became the youngest scorer in Hajduk Split history.
In January 2024, Vuskovic joined Polish top division side Radomiak Radom on a six-month loan.
He made 14 appearances and scored three goals for the Polish outfit.
His most successful loan spell came in Belgium, when he joined Belgian Pro League club Westerlo.
From centre-back, Vuskovic scored seven goals and even earned the league’s goal of the season award for his goal against Club Brugge.
He agreed a deal with Spurs in 2023 but didn’t officially join the club until the summer of 2025.
After making some substitute appearances during the preseason, the Croatian requested more minutes and subsequently joined Hamburg.
How has he fared at Hamburg so far?
Vuskovic defender joined Hamburg on 29 August 2025 and has become one of the best defenders around.
The 18-year-old has scored four goals in the league this season, netting a decisive goal in Hamburg’s 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich last weekend.
In December, he scored a scorpion kick against Werder Bremen in a 3-2 win.
In a September match against Union Berlin, he won 18 aerial duels.
It’s the most aerial duels won by any player in Europe’s top five leagues in five years.
According to Opta, no other player has more aerial duels than him this season.
The Croatian has a high defensive IQ and can read sharp passes through tight gaps.
At 6ft4, he has a strong body, allowing him to be fierce in a tackle and win his duels.
At such a young age, he’s shown a fantastic ability to make recover tackles and keep up with pacy attackers.
He has played two senior games for the Croatian national team, making his debut against the Czech Republic in June 2025.
High praise from football legends
His incredible maturity at such a young age has earned him praise from German great Lothar Matthaus and his compatriot Ivan Rakitic.
Rakitic said (quotes via Sky Germany), “I think he has to go to Bayern, but the whole of European football is talking about him at the moment, so they need to get a move on.”
The Croatian added, “I’m interested to see if Tottenham manages to keep him beyond the summer.”
The 1990 World Cup winner Matthaus said via Sky Germany, “It’s not just about winning headers and tackles or scoring goals: he’s somebody who can organise a defence. That’s something you find very rarely.”
“He’s 18 years old, but he’s playing with the cool head of someone who has played at three World Cups and won two Champions League titles.”
What does the future hold for him?
The futures of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are still unclear.
So, next summer, the Croatian star could be required to start if either of those players leaves.

Reports of Romero leaving the club have intensified after he labelled Spurs’ current injury troubles as ‘disgraceful’ on Instagram.
If Romero is to leave the club, Spurs have the perfect replacement to fill in his shoes and partner with Van de Ven.
However, with Tottenham in a state of turmoil, it remains to be seen what happens if some of Europe’s giants circle for Vuskovic, especially with the youngster in line to feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup for Croatia.
