Ahmed Musa has said goodbye to the Nigeria national team. Just days before the commencement of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Musa, who captained the Super Eagles to two (2) FIFA World Cup tournaments. Using social media confirmed his retirement from international football via an emotional post.

His post included a lengthy message recounting his journey with the Super Eagles.

It reads: “I wore this badge with pride for 15 years. From a 17-year-old boy answering every call to becoming the most capped Super Eagle with 111 appearances. AFCON champion. Nigeria’s highest World Cup goalscorer. Captain. Servant. Believer.”

The 33-year-old, who plied his trade in the Premier League with Leicester City between 2016 and 2018. He indicated that he gave his all for Nigeria, and appreciated several parties who contributed immensely to his international career.

Moreover, Ahmed Musa added a telling message to the post. Acknowledging the privilege he has enjoyed from playing football and representing Nigeria. He wrote: “Football gave me a career, but Nigeria gave me meaning.”

The former CSKA Moscow man was among Nigeria’s contingent that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Musa is Nigeria’s all-time leading goalscorer in the World Cup with four (4) goals. Having scored 2 goals each at the 2014 and 2018 editions, respectively.

Ahmed Musa scored 18 goals and provided 16 assists in 111 appearances for the Super Eagles.

The attacker last played for Nigeria on May 28, 2025, in a 2-1 win for Eric Chelle’s side over Ghana.

The ex-Al Nassr star currently plays for Nigeria Premier League club Kano Pillars. He has made 9 appearances this campaign, scoring 1 goal across all competitions.

Musa was on the bench for the entirety of the Super Eagles' outing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Where they finished second (2nd) after losing the final by 2-1 to host nation Ivory Coast.

Ahmed Musa’s retirement announcement is coming about a fortnight after William Troost-Ekong. Who also shared his decision to call it quits from the Nigeria national team.
