Morocco overcame Nigeria 4-2 on penalties in the semi-finals of the ongoing 2025 AFCON on home soil in front of a buoyant support after a 0-0 draw in regulation and extra-time, but the scoreline never reflected the full story.

In hindsight, the scoreline possibly flattered Nigeria, who had been scoring goals for fun in the build up to the semi. Morocco managed to neutralise all of the Super Eagles’ star attackers, and earned their place in the final.

Striver Football analyses the 5 masterclass moves that allowed Morocco to tactically dominate the Nigerians to secure their spot in the final.

Morocco dominated the midfield battle thanks to their sheer hard work and relentless pressing, which also involved center forward Ayoub El Kaabi.

Nigeria missed captain Wilfred Ndidi through suspension, and Morocco took full advantage. Normally a strong presence in midfield with the ability to dictate the tempo with his passing range from deep, as well as press resistance, Nigeria brought in Frank Onyedika to play as the deepest lying player.

He found himself constantly pressed out of the game, which allowed Morocco to take advantage by creating waves of attacks in transition. It reflects in the eight times he lost the ball as per data from Sofascore.

Ismael Saibari and  Bilal El Khannous found themselves with so much freedom to attack the spaces, with Saibari in particular, being a threat from the left half space, as seen on the passmap below:

Throughout the tournament, Nigeria have sought to attack in a 4-4-2 diamond narrow set up. The full backs have been providing the width, which has allowed Akor Adams and Ademola Lookman to provide support to Victor Osimhen.

In Ndidi, Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi, they have had three central midfielders who have set the platform for the front three to succeed. However, Morocco chose to stretch Nigeria through their flanks, which gave them all sorts of problems.

Brahim Diaz and Archraf Hakimi in particular, tried to create overloads down the right flank, but Bruno Onyemaechi did well for himself, winning his battles against Diaz, whose goalscoring spree was halted.

Hakimi however, made overlapping runs which Nigeria struggled to contain.

Stretching the defence meant taking Nigerian attackers away from positions to influence the game.

Yassine Bounou will be remembered more for his penalty saving heroics during the game, but his influence was also felt in possession,

Bounou’s confident handling of crosses and accurate long passes were instrumental in Morocco’s ability to build from the back and relieve pressure.

Bonou barely rushed his decisions. He always looked for a progressive pass to a midfielder or fullback, rather than simply launching the ball long.

This allowed Morocco to maintain their midfield control and denied Nigeria easy possession turnover in dangerous areas.

Bounou's presence and intelligent play reduced Nigeria’s xG to a mere 0.08, showcasing his quiet dominance even before the dramatic shootout. His calm demeanor radiated through the defense, instilling confidence in the entire backline.

Morocco have struggled to advance far in recent AFCON tournaments, but they finally made the final in the ongoing edition on home soil.

Their electric home crowd advantage, as well as their mental fortitude enabled them not to succumb to the heavy pressure of being expected to deliver.

Nigeria did their best to wind the clock down, which could have injected panic into the squad, but they stayed calm, and it showed during the penalty shootout,

Morocco's tactical masterclass was clear for all to see, proving that control and execution can win matches even without scoring in open play. From midfield dominance to Bounou’s brilliance, the Atlas Lions look formidable.
