Brighton & Hove Albion opened the new year with a strong 2-0 victory over Burnley at the American Express Stadium, inflicted by goals either side of half-time as the Seagulls finally broke their winless run.

The result gives Brighton a timely boost after a frustrating December without victory, while Burnley remain rooted near the bottom of the Premier League as they continue to battle for survival.

Brighton seized the initiative midway through the first half when Georginio Rutter reacted quickest in the box to finish from close range in the 29th minute. The home side had shown energy and intent from the outset, and Rutter’s opener rewarded their dominance.

Just after the break, Brighton put the game out of reach. Yasin Ayari was alert in the penalty area and slotted home in the 47th minute, doubling the lead and silencing any hopes of a Burnley fightback.

From there, Brighton managed the contest well. They kept the ball effectively, moved it with purpose and limited Burnley’s attacking opportunities.

Burnley rarely threatened the Brighton goal, with goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen largely untested before the hosts picked up their second. Brighton’s shape and intensity made it difficult for the visitors to impose themselves in either half.

The result sees Brighton climb away from the bottom half, while Burnley remain in a perilous position as they look for their first win of 2026.

For Brighton, this feels like a moment of release after a barren end to 2025. The performance showed coherence and pressing intent that had been missing in recent weeks.

Burnley, on the other hand, still needs to tighten defensively and find a way to convert possession into clear chances. Their search for points continues as the league grind wears on.

Brighton will take confidence from this result and look to build momentum into their next fixtures.
