Just days after parting ways with Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim, fresh reports have cast a shadow over the future of Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox.

Wilcox, a former Premier League-winning winger, was a key appointment in the new Sir Jim Ratcliffe era. He initially joined as Technical Director on April 19, 2024, before being promoted 14 months later after Dan Ashworth left.

Ashworth was tasked with overseeing the entire football operation, including a much-needed revitalisation of recruitment and the club's fabled academy system.

However, French journalist Romain Molina suggests INEOS is now in favor of another sporting director for Manchester United. This has sent shockwaves among the fanbase, prompting speculation about Wilcox’s competency for the role.

There had been widespread reports about tensions with head coach Ruben Amorim, which serves as a stark backdrop to this development. The relationship broke down over fundamental disagreements on tactics.

Wilcox and the INEOS structure were in favor of pushing for a formation change, which Amorim resisted. A series of heated exchanges and public demands from the Portuguese coach ultimately proved the final straw.

Following Man United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United, Amorim insisted he was the manager, rather than head coach. They proved comments that sealed his fate.

United are desperate for stability. The last thing required is an impetuous change of football leadership yet again. The risks of a power struggle at the executive level risk further turmoil for United.

The ambiguity of Molina’s tweet is the key source of uncertainty. Does INEOS plan to bring in a higher profile of sporting director to work alongside Wilcox? Or does it mean it is the end of the road for the former Manchester City academy head?

The coming weeks will reveal whether INEOS is building a more robust team or orchestrating another change at the top. In the meantime, they are preparing to take on Burnley in their next league clash.
