Liverpool have made a definitive decision on the short-term future of teenage star Trey Nyoni as several European clubs plot a move for the young star in the ongoing January transfer window.
The Reds, who have been struggling throughout the season, have not had the luxury of giving their teenage prospects enough game time.
Now, head coach Arne Slot and the recruitment team have clarified their plans for the 18-year-old midfielder.
Liverpool believe Nyoni does not need to be loaned out at this particular moment in time. According to The Athletic, the club have no intention of letting him leave this month.
Nyoni has been a permanent fixture in Arne Slot’s matchday squads during the 2025-2026 campaign. He has been an unused substitute on 16 occasions, making just five appearances.
The club believe his exposure to first-team training is more valuable than a temporary move elsewhere.
The decision to keep him at Anfield is calculated by the club’s recruitment and loans department. U21 coach Rob Page and his assistants are focusing on his physical development.
According to a report by The Athletic from November, Nyoni is currently on a specific training programme to enhance his slender frame for the rigors of Premier League football.
Injuries to players like Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni, as well as the potential departure of Andy Robertson means Slot is hesitant to weaken his squad depth any further.
The club believe being mentored by seasoned internationals like Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister will boost his technical growth.
"If there’s an opportunity in the market to strengthen, the club will try," Slot noted earlier this week in a press conference.
He added, "But at this moment, I expect the squad to stay mainly the same."
Nyoni remains eligible for youth competition. He is expected to captain the U19s in their crucial UEFA Youth League round of 32 clash with MSK Zilina next Tuesday.
