Zimbabwe and Striver's AFCON Ambassador Macauley Bonne is in Morocco for the big tournament. But, his journey to this stage has been far from straight forward. He reflected on what has been an emotional journey.
"It's not been easy and there were a few tears shed when I finally made it"....
Macauley recently signed for Maldon & Tiptree F.C. in step-four of England. Soon after got the call to go to AFCON with Zimbabwe. It is a great example of how your fortunes can change. How your hard work has a path. How persistence drives opportunities. Most of all, how you are never completely out of the game. There's always a way back to the top.
The 30-year-old, who recently joined Maldon and Tiptree in the Isthmian League North. Has had an impressive career hovering around the Championship and the EFL leagues in England. Playing for the likes of QPR, Charlton Athletic and Southend United at Wembley in a play-off final. But, he admitted this year and in other stages of his career, he felt "unwanted".
He has accumulated nearly 400 appearances for club and country. He will be looking to not just add to that, but to add a unique value of persistence, quality and excitement at AFCON.
What we appreciate about AFCON is the passion, the stars it unveils. The talents who are already on the main stage and ultimately the joy it provides to many. It is a special tournament which platforms Africa on the world stage. Brings the true sense of belonging which comes with representing your country.
The forward will kick-start his AFCON journey vs Egypt on the 22nd December. Follow his AFCON journey, exclusively on Striver. We look forward to watching him flourish.
