Kobbie Mainoo’s Old Trafford landscape now looks set for a smooth turn as Manchester United have opened talks with the England international over a new contract.

Just weeks ago, the 20-year-old’s long-term future at Man United looked bleak. Under Ruben Amorim’s management, Mainoo struggled for consistent first-team opportunities.

This led to initial contract talks held last February stalling with the midfielder unsettled.

However, since the appointment of Michael Carrick on an interim basis, Mainoo has now looked like a player reborn.

He has been one of United’s shining lights as they beat both Man City and Arsenal, respectively, to soar to fourth place.

According to The Athletic, United are now prepared to resume talks over a lucrative new deal for the midfielder. At the moment, Mainoo earns approximately £20,000-a-week.

This was a figure agreed upon in February 2023 when he had only two senior appearances to his name.

Mainoo’s current deal runs until the end of the 2026/2027 season, although United have an option to trigger a one-year extension clause. The Red Devils are nonetheless prepared to offer him improved terms to reflect his status as a cornerstone of the side now.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have also made it clear they are not in any rush to let go of Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee. Both players have been linked with moves to Ajax and Roma, respectively.

Dutch left back Tyrell Malacia could be on the move, though, with the club exploring loan options for him to depart before his contract expires in the summer.

At the academy level, Toby Collyer is expected to finalise a loan move to Hull City. Defender Tyler Fredricson is expected to secure an EFL move following a recent change in representation.

Elsewhere, Ethan Wheatley has been recalled from a difficult loan spell at Northampton Town. The striker is not expected to stay long. He is on the verge of joining promotion-hunting Bradford City in League One. United will hope his move provides him with the game time he needs to thrive.
