Aston Villa pulled off a tactical masterclass at St. James' Park, securing a clinical 2-0 victory over Newcastle United.
Despite the Magpies dominating possession, Unai Emery’s side proved far more efficient in front of goal. An opener from Emi Buendia set the tone early on before a late header from Ollie Watkins acted as a knockout blow to a Newcastle side that simply couldn't find its clinical edge.
The atmosphere at St. James' Park was electric at kickoff, but it didn't take long for Emery’s side to stun the home crowd. From the first whistle, Aston Villa looked like a team with a plan. They dominated the ball, leaving Newcastle’s midfield chasing shadows for the opening twenty minutes.
Eddie Howe tried to use Sven Botman to man-mark Morgan Rogers, but in the 20th minute, the breakthrough finally came. Emi Buendia found the net with a stunning long-range strike that left Nick Pope with no chance, thanks to an assist from the Englishman.
After conceding, Newcastle didn't fold. The Magpies began to keep possession, with Sandro Tonali and Lewis Miley putting in a massive shift to ensure their opponents didn't touch the ball for several minutes.
By the end of the first half, Newcastle held the higher possession at nearly 57%, but they struggled to test Emi Martinez, finishing with fewer shots on target.
The second half started with a completely different energy. Newcastle came out playing like a team that had been yelled at about their poor first-half performance. For the first twenty minutes after the restart, they hogged the ball and pushed their possession up to 60%, camping out in Villa’s half.
The Magpies came close in the 55th minute when Kieran Trippier whipped a dangerous cross into the box. However, Harvey Barnes tried to use his feet instead of his head. That slight touch was enough to take the ball away from Anthony Gordon, who was waiting to tap it in at the back post.
There was a huge moment of controversy when Rogers and Youri Tielemans both went down under heavy challenges, but the referee waved play on. Newcastle tried to capitalize on the advantage, but Pau Torres prevented that from happening by heading the cross clear.
It looked like the match might draw to a tense climax before Lucas Digne found Watkins with a cross. The England international headed the ball past Pope to make it 2-0.
It was a brilliant away performance from Villa. Despite eight minutes of added time, Newcastle had lost their energy and hope. The home fans began to head for the exits, knowing that their club had been beaten by a clinical side.
