AFCON 2025 continued to deliver drama, history, and standout individual performances on Day 4 of the tournament. From record-breaking feats to match-winning cameos and emotional family milestones, the day offered football fans plenty to savor.
Here are five memorable moments that defined another exciting chapter of Africa’s biggest football spectacle.
Algeria enjoyed a dream start to their tournament, thumping Sudan 3-0, with Riyad Mahrez scoring a brace for the desert foxes.
Mahrez, who is now based in Saudi Arabia, netted the first two goals in the second and 61st minute. Ibrahim Maza netted the third goal to round off a good day for them.
By netting both goals, Mahrez officially became Algeria’s all time leading goalscorer at the AFCON stage. He now has eight goals at this stage.
The former Manchester City man will be hoping he can keep the momentum going. He guided Algeria to victory at the AFCON 2019 edition. Breaking more individual records will only be sweetened further with a second AFCON crown.
Ivory Coast labored hard to beat Mozambique in their opening game of the tournament. For them to have been able to achieve that feat, Amad Diallo was key.
Despite dominating the game as expected, Ivory Coast were struggling to bury their chances, until Diallo found the back of the net in the 49th minute.
Diallo ran riot down the right flank with his one v one sense, as well as his surprisingly good weaker-foot crossing. However, they just were not clinical enough. Mozambique keeper Hernâni Siluane was called into action on several occasions.
Ivory Coast must work on becoming more clinical in future games if they are to stand a chance of successfully defending their title.
Cameroon have endured a lot of problems off the pitch in recent years. Under the leadership of Samuel Eto’o, off-the-pitch wrangles have dominated their football.
Kicking their AFCON 2025 campaign with victory will be a relief for everyone involved with the side. They will be hoping they can carry on with their momentum. Winning tends to overwrite other things.
Ivory Coast endured a difficult start to the 2023 AFCON, but a change in management following the group stages was the start of their new era dominance under Emerse Fae.
Cameroon will be hoping they can keep their momentum going when they take on Ivory Coast in their next game.
Burkina Faso showed the importance of having impactors that can turn nothing into something. After Basilo Ndong of Equatorial Guinea was sent off in the 50th minute, the West African nation resorted to playing it cautiously.
Burkina Faso enjoyed large spells of possession but without much penetration. Georgi Minoungou, who came on as a substitute in the 79th minute, only needed six minutes to make an impact, finding the back of the net to put them into the lead.
Equatorial Guinea themselves would equalise shortly after with a substitute of their own, Marvin Anieboh. It looked as if the game was headed for a draw, until Edmond Tabsoba found the winning goal for the Burkinabe deep into stoppage time,
Zinedine Zidane is considered one of the greatest playmakers of all time. Although he was born to Algerian parents in France, he chose to represent his country of birth.
He set a legacy so big, all his four sons have struggled to live up to his legacy. However, Enzo Zidane, a goalkeeper, chose to represent Algeria.
It was therefore a moment of joy to witness the former Real Madrid great watch from the stands as Enzo started between the sticks for the Desert Foxes.
Day 4 of AFCON 2025 proved once again why the tournament remains a stage for history, heroics, and human stories that go beyond the scoreline.
As the competition heats up, fans can expect even more unforgettable moments as Africa’s finest continue their quest for continental glory.
