Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has shown decisive leadership after vowing to personally settle outstanding bonus payments owed to Nigeria’s players and coaching staff, as the team turns full attention to their AFCON 2025 quarter-final clash against Algeria.

The issue first came to light on Thursday, following a post on X by BBC sport writer Oluwashina Okeleji, who reported that unpaid bonuses were threatening to disrupt Nigeria’s preparations. Wilfred Ndidi's involvement brought renewed focus to the team. The revelation sparked widespread discussion, with fans and pundits closely monitoring developments within the Super Eagles camp.

Federal Government Confirms Payment Process Update

Nigeria’s Deputy Finance Minister, Doris Uzoka-Anite, later addressed the situation, confirming that the federal government had streamlined the processing of the outstanding payments.

According to the minister, players and officials were expected to start receiving their bonuses either immediately or by Friday. The announcement brought some reassurance, though the delays had already raised concerns over squad morale and preparation.

Ndidi Takes Responsibility to Protect Team Unity

Determined to prevent off-field issues from affecting performances, Ndidi stepped in with a clear message to his teammates and the coaching staff.

“I don’t want these unpaid bonuses to affect our preparations. I told the players and coaching staff that I’d personally make the payments if they don’t get it,” Ndidi said, underscoring the commitment of Wilfred Ndidi.

The Besiktas midfielder also urged the squad to continue training in Marrakesh and remain committed to the upcoming fixture against Algeria, regardless of the uncertainty surrounding the payments.

Squad Trains as Preparations Continue

Despite earlier reports suggesting a possible training boycott, the situation improved. Wilfred Ndidi's leadership ensured that the Super Eagles reportedly trained on Thursday, demonstrating professionalism and focus at a crucial stage of the tournament.

The training session was seen as a direct response to Ndidi’s leadership, as the squad chose unity and preparation over protest. It also reinforced the team’s determination to stay competitive on the continental stage.

Four Match Bonuses Still Outstanding

Players and coaching staff are still waiting to receive win bonuses from four matches in Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign. These include victories against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Mozambique.

While frustration remains, sources close to the camp insist that the group remains united. The decision to train and prepare as planned underlined a collective commitment to the national cause.

Full Focus on Algeria Quarter-Final

With the bonus issue gradually being addressed, Nigeria are now fully focused on their next encounter against Algeria. The highly anticipated AFCON 2025 quarter-final will take place on Saturday at the Stade de Marrakech.

The Super Eagles view the match as a defining moment in their tournament journey. Algeria present a tough challenge, but Nigeria’s camp remains confident, disciplined, and motivated.
Wilfred Ndidi later reaffirmed his commitment to the group.

“I’ve been pushing the team to train and play the game versus Algeria since the second match. I’ve now committed to personally paying the bonuses if the authorities fail to do so before Saturday,” he added.

As kickoff approaches, Nigeria’s focus is firmly on the pitch. With leadership, unity, and ambition driving the squad, the Super Eagles will look to channel their resolve into a strong performance in Marrakech.
