Wolves need a Christmas miracle to try and overturn their current position. Currently sitting on two points, they are the only side yet to win in the Premier League. They find themselves bottom at Christmas losing their most recent game to Brentford.
The Midlands side finished 16th in the League last season. They were some distance off the relegation zone with a seventeen point gap between them and Leicester City. During the summer Wolves lost top goal scorer Matheus Cunha to Manchester United. They also lost key defender Rayan Aït-Nouri to Manchester City.
These key losses have clearly affected the side, notably Matheus Cunha. Wolves have scored the fewest goals in the League this season, only netting nine times.
Poor results earlier in the season led to the sacking of Vítor Pereira who had guided the Wanderers to safety last season. In his small stint at the club he won six Premier League games in succession, a first for Wolves as they had previously only won three games in the league consecutively.
Rob Edwards was brought into replace Vítor Pereira. Edwards played for Wolves back in the 2000s and had a stint as the Under 23s manager during the 2018/19 and 2019/20 season. In the six games in charge Rob Edwards is yet to secure a single point as manager, losing all six games.
As the season goes on at Molineux ambition is beginning to change. Wolves already has the joint lowest point tally at Christmas. sharing the record with Sheffield United in the 2020/21 season. As pressure grows on Rob Edwards Wolves fans will not want to admit defeat but may have to settle that relegation is their fate.
This means that their goal, similar to Southampton's last season, is to beat Derby's infamous 2007/08 point tally. The lowest point tally in Premier League history. Eleven points is what Derby finished on that year, 9 points more than Wolves currently have. Wolves will need to perform better in the second half of the season and be active in the January transfer window to ensure they do not go down as the worst team in Premier League history. Their next game against title holders Liverpool will be key.
