Mahmoud Saber and Mostafa Mohamed on target as Egypt edge Nigeria 2–1 in AFCON warm-up

Egypt offered a timely reminder of their pedigree with a composed 2–1 victory over Nigeria in Cairo. Concluding their Africa Cup of Nations preparations on a reassuring note.

Goals from Mahmoud Saber and Mostafa Mohamed ensured Rui Vitoria’s side emerged on top in a lively friendly that carried far more edge than its billing suggested, with the Pharaohs controlling long periods and finishing the stronger.

There were notable absences. Mohamed Salah, having only just joined up with the squad after leaving Liverpool at the weekend, was deemed short of match fitness, while Omar Marmoush also arrived late.

Even so, Egypt’s cohesion and tempo underlined their readiness ahead of Monday’s opener against Zimbabwe.

Egypt’s intent was clear from the outset, pressing with purpose and moving the ball quickly through midfield. Nigeria offered physical resistance, but the hosts repeatedly found joy down the right, where Ahmed Zizo proved a constant menace.

The breakthrough arrived on 28 minutes. A corner was initially cleared, yet Egypt recycled possession with patience.

Mohamed Hany released Zizo down the flank and his low, intelligent cross dissected the Nigeria defence, allowing Saber to arrive unmarked at the back post to tap into an empty net. It was a goal that reflected Egypt’s sharper movement and superior organisation.

Nigeria struggled to establish rhythm before the interval, with El Shenawy largely untroubled as Egypt went in deservedly ahead.

The visitors briefly threatened to swing momentum their way a crowded penalty area delayed a free-kick. From the resulting phase Zaidu’s effort squirmed under El Shenawy. Calvin Bassey kept the ball alive, enabling Chidozie Awaziem to head home from close range. Making it 1-1 seconds before the half time break.

Parity, was short lived. Egypt responded with control rather than panic, continuing to probe through Zizo, who was central to the decisive moment.

His clever movement created the space for Mostafa Mohamed, and when the chance came, the striker finished decisively. Francis Obasogie in the Nigeria goal will feel he could have done better. However Egypt’s lead was restored on the 53rd minute making it 2-1.

Beyond the result, the performance offered reassurance. Egypt looked cohesive despite the absence of Salah, whose imminent return to action will only strengthen their attacking options.

The understanding between the wide players and the central forwards was encouragin. As was the team’s ability to respond positively after conceding an attribute that often defines successful tournament sides.

Vitória will also be pleased with the game management on display. There was maturity in how Egypt saw out the final minutes, avoiding unnecessary risks. However they still posed enough threat to keep Nigeria honest.

It spoke of a group well drilled and increasingly comfortable with the demands of knockout football.

As attention turns to Monday’s opener against Zimbabwe. Where Striver.Football ambassador Macauley Bonne is like to feature. Egypt have key players still to be fully unleashed such as Mohamed Salah and Omar Mamoush. For Nigeria, attention now turns to Tanzania as the Africa Cup of Nations begins in five days time.
